The #WinePW #FestadelleDonne Preview and a Vermouth Cocktail from Nicole Walsh

Writer's picture: Culinary CamCulinary Cam

This month I invited the Wine Pairing Weekend writers to shine their spotlights on women in wine. You can read my invitation to the #WinePW Festa delle Donne.

I already mentioned that I am hosting, so I decided to do something a little bit differently. I embraced 'the more, the merrier' and told the writers they could link up as many articles on the topic as they have live by Saturday morning. Here we go. I can't wait to learn more about all of these women in wine!

The Line-Up

Ser Winery's Nicole Walsh and her Vermouth Cocktail

Years ago I met Nicole Walsh at Randal Grahm's Popelouchum vineyard. Popelouchum, the Mutsan word for 'paradise', is Bonny Doon Vineyard's 400-acre vineyard and farm just outside of San Juan Bautista. While continuing to manage Popelouchum and make wine at Bonny Doon's Santa Cruz winery, Nicole was inspired to launch her own wine brand, Ser.

You can tell how long ago that initial meeting was: Bonny Doon has since changed hands though Nicole is still their winemaker.

Then I met up with her, again, in 2018. You can read the article I posted after that: The Effervescent Nicole Walsh Dishes On Ser And Being a Woman (in Wine) & Sparkling Rosé of Nebbiolo + Fusion Street Tacos.

When I picked the topic for this month's #WinePW, I knew that I wanted to reconnect with Nicole. I texted her and she happened to be headed my way the following week. So, she brought me several bottles and we met at one of my favorite coffee shops. Neither of us had much time. But I got a quick update and will be sharing more about what she has been doing. She is an impressive woman.

One of the bottles she brought me was her vermouth. She was quick to add that hers is a sipping vermouth. Vermouth is an aromatized, fortified wine used as an aperitif. 'Apertif' derives from the Latin 'aperire' which means 'to open.' It is imbibed before the meal to open up the appetite. Then she gave me a recipe for a cocktail made with it.

Ingredients

makes one cocktail

  • 1 part vermouth (a sipping vermouth!)

  • 1 part Aperol or Campari

  • 1 part Sparkling Orange Muscat

  • 1 large ice cube for serving

  • Optional: organic flowers for garnish

Procedure

Place an ice cube in the bottom of a serving glass. I opted or a wine glass. Pour in 1 part Aperol, 1 part sipping vermouth, and 1 part sparkling orange muscat. Garnish with an organic flower. Serve immediately. Cheers!

The group will be posting throughout this week and I will link to all of the posts on Saturday.
