Gelato di Fichi #SundayFunday

This weekend the Sunday Funday writers are sharing recipes where figs are the star. Amy of Amy's Cooking Adventures is hosting.

Stacy of Food Lust People Love, Sue of Palatable Pastime, Rebekah of Making Miracles, and Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm coordinate this low-stress group; we only participate when we are inspired. I already mentioned that Amy is hosting this week. Here's our line-up of fig recipes...

Gelato di Fichi

I love figs and pondered what to share. Then I realized that I could make my absolute favorite gelato (or ice cream): fichi! This was a flavor that I always ordered when I saw it on the menu in gelaterie all over Italy. But the season was short, so it made it even more special. You can certainly make this with brown or purple figs, but the kind I loved was the green fig gelato. I have also made this with Tiger Stripe Figs - the ones that are striped green and yellow. Just make sure they are really ripe...almost to the point of being too ripe.

Also this is a very stripped down process. There is no making a custard; there is no cooking involved at all. It's perfect for a summer day when you would rather be at the beach or the pool. Do this in the morning, and enjoy it when you get home.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped fresh green figs, destemmed

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

  • juice from 1 lemon

  • 1/2 cup organic granulated sugar

  • fresh green figs, for serving, 1 per person (optional, I just like serving this inside a fresh fig!)

  • Also needed: an ice cream machine

Procedure

Place all of the ingredients in your ice cream maker and process according to your machine. Ours took about 40 minutes to come to a soft, gelato-like texture. Spoon ice cream into a container and freeze before serving.

That's a wrap for my fig offering for #SundayFunday. The group will return next week with recipes that feature cucumbers. Stay tuned!

I don't think I've ever seen this type of fig but I imagine Mission figs would work too! This sounds wonderful.

I know that I would LOVE this gelato. How I wish figs were not so darned expensive here in Michigan.
